...Accordingly if South Africans have been training foreign military without authorisation...

The truth is that it depends on what side of the fence you sit. If government wants to be involved youare allowed to kill or SUPPLY ARMS.

they probably are.

but you have to stop and think that part of the problem is, oh, the ways that the police and defence forces are meeting their employment representation targets: sacking the white folk. it's no accident that so many of the mercenaries worldwide are south african whites.

there are a LOT of south africans in the blackwater mercenary company [or whatever they're calling themselves now], and a friend of a friend blogged that the only way his brother and his girlfriend could get out of new orleans was to speak afrikaans to the hired guns trapping them there. [yup, blackwater was part of the hired army keeping people from getting out of the city and into metairie.]

those "contractors" that are missing in baghdad? mercenaries.

funnily enough, they're part of the reason that south africans are now taxed on their worldwide income. USD100k a year tax-free to work for blackwater was just too much for trev and gordy to ignore.

It seems a little rich that it's no problem to supply arms to some spectacularly dubious regimes, but we have a problem with private citizens utilizing their military skills outside the country.

Not that I hold truck with either, but the disconnect is jarring.
