Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu has suspended Australian mining company Mintails’ operations in Kagiso on the west rand after community members embarked on protests citing serious environmental, safety and health violations and structural damage to their houses as a result of the mine’s operations in close proximity to their homes. Media for Justice reports that community members view government’s investigation into Mintails’ operations as a smokescreen to “distract from irregularities in the granting of its mining licence”. Kagiso community members have repeatedly requested a copy of the environmental impact assessment, but this has been refused.

Watch interviews with Kagiso community members who speak about the impact that this open-cast mine is having on their lives. They are demanding the immediate and complete closure of the mine.
