I had the interesting experience of working with 3 Polish students and two young SAffricans in Herefordshire for a couple of weeks. Two of the Poles were education students, the other was studying economics. They had all read at least one book by JM Coetzee and/or Nadine Gordimer. Discussing their impressions of SA literature with them caused my to reflect on my exposure to Polish literature (unfortunately none to date). Another memorable conversation was between them one of my compatriots - he innocently asked whether the president of Poland was black or white.

Just to be clear - this was the only negative reaction I've gotten as foreigner in Poland. And I found it worth mentioning only because of the absurdness of the situation. This should in no way be read as a complaint or accusation.

The neat lengths of sausages, which are tied at both ends, mean that the juices don't escape in the cooking. Boerewors needs to be one length until cooked, or it would lose moisture and taste at both ends...

Great article. Sad,disturbing and exhilarating at the same time. But this is how the
reality in Poland looks like...Out of unawareness come ignorance and hostility.Polish
mentality seems to be not yet ready for South Africa - or should I say Africa
on the whole. Let's hope this situation will change some day...

You are great! I am reminded we all take ourselves far too seriously. Having lived in SA for 50 years, I thought all one needed to know about 'braai' was boerewors. And oh! Is there a reason why it was never made into neat lengths like sausages?

Yet, if you look at this country of over 6 million souls, it is one of the most successful exporters of culture in the world. Most cities in the world have some form of Irish pub, and you can hardly avoid (try as you might) hearing an Irish band at some point.
