What current bothers me the most is that MXit, the company, does not make it easy for 3rd parties to create interfaces into the MXit platform. The software is built using the Jabber open source IM protocols. So from the beginning the CSIR used this interface into MXit. Last year MXit closed down all external access via public Jabber servers. And this in turn has severely stunted the adoption, growth and roll out of Dr Math.

So right now you can forget about launching related or enhanced education programs because the fundamental architecture is closed down. Dr Math had to resort, with assistance from MXit, to using various SIM cards to connect with their users. These SIM cards in turn is limited in the number of concurrent users.

Thanks for the links. Yes, both NokNok and Meep (Vodacom) could be used for similar purposes. It will be interesting to see if these new products diminish MXit's huge market lead. From an education point of view, interoperability is first prize. It shouldn't matter who is on what network or product, as long as learners and educators can easily and affordably communicate and access content.
