I've always thought that the Woody was a bit aloof... the Mbeki effect? Another example is Vuyo Mbuli. First common-sense angle I’ve heard on this matter (well, outside my head). Sometimes, the reason’s so simple it completely goes over people’s heads. Forget racism, media conspiracies, the girl-troupe are in cahoots with the wife theory…oh gosh. He’s JUST NOT a NICE PERSON. Period. Hence these guys :Clinton, Beckham, Ashley Cole (maybe), Zuma, Berlusconi etc have been able to get on with their PUBLIC lives post the sexual controversies they were involved in and gotten away with murder. If you pretend to be perfect, and base your life on an act, and then you blow it, well, you shoot yourself in the foot. You live and/or die by your own sword. Says a lot for living honestly and transparently and with a little humility - this allows you to make mistakes and the trade-off is that you aren't swaggering around and being arrogant or holier than though.
