I volunteer at a school for migrant children every second Saturday. Today we did a Thanksgiving 'lesson' incorporating the story of the pilgrims, food vocab and a craft activity - making a big paper turkey by drawing around our hands, writing down what we are thankful for, and sticking all the hands (feathers) on the board. Two things struck me about the activity: Firstly that the kids (Gr 8) took much longer than most westerners of that age would have (implying that they spend little time drawing and cutting), secondly that possibly all of them wrote that they were thankful for their teachers.

Thanks for the game idea, I'll use it soon : )

At high school, I spent several hours standing in corridors learning Bible verses by heart. I probably assumed this had little affect on my behaviour, but I could never say I didn't know the difference between right and wrong. I was also constructively occupied and could go as soon as I had parroted the words correctly. Forty years later, my achool-going son spent several hours standing in corridors with his forehead against the wall...doing sweet blow all. Why does it seem logical to me that that's a recipe for disaster? That breeds boredom and gets no point across.

My child in prep school and foundation school has
had no male teachers. They quite a rare species
here in Pretoria. When I was at an all boy school
in late 70s-80s the catholic teachers usually
all male rarely did the homework you are doing
before disciplining..They just went ballistic
with the cane and verbal abuse in front of everyone.
I always get rapport from teachers that they love to teach chinese/asian children even here in SA.
