THe cause of the accelerated exploitation of the earth’s resources is overpopulation. This is what necessitates the desire of constant economic growth at the expense of the environment. The mthematics of balance between predator and prey has been investigated and shows that if this balance is seriously disturbed, then an ultimnate breakdown and extinction will follow. The same applies to the growing imbalance between humans and the environment.

@HD – Please explain who you are referring to when you talk about “being better off” , “time for leisure” and also the “would be” in this sentence:

“Without that you would be in a natural state of subsistence and daily survival.”

What percentage of the global population constitutes this group you refer to?

Excellent article.
An instituted 1 child policy across the board, and expensive permits for an additional child should be legislated everywhere (except native Scandinavians). They are already in decline.

Jolly good, I quite agree. Research should continue in a big way, but not every discovery has the last word. In fact, few do. Each is a means to an end. I’m still amused that we have no idea what mobile phones might have done to us so far and I’m not sure anyone is asking. Was this what happened with motor vehicles and oil? (Don’t knock a good thing, Guys. After all, it’s only the people five generations along who’ll need to cope with it.)

As one of the pessimists whom you are not adressing, here, and totally agreeing with the thrust of this article, I will sit this one out, except to say, you really do like living dangerously, don’t you A quality I can only admire in the new age of apathy and zero accountability we seem to have entered. Rub their noses in it until they wake up and smell the ozone.

Changing the beliefs of the majority who are previously disadvantaged is a tall order. So too, will it be a challenge to slow consumer demand derived by business and marketing pundits. Roger, while your ideals are laudable, your practical solutions in later blog posts will have more significance.

Any look at human history and geography will tell you that “we” (humans) are better of that ever at any time in our history.

Any successful economy centers around producing more goods(real economic growth) allowing for savings, credit investment, innovation and for extra resources to be spend.

The only reason you have time for leisure, pleasure and relaxing is because of this development. Without that you would be in a natural state of subsistence and daily survival.
