Oil is a fossil fuel and combustion of fossil fuels leads to global warming. That is the problem with fossil fuels. It is better that they run out because their combustion is going to see us off the planet.

Don’t count on renewables: they need rare earth elements (neodymium in windmills, for example) or other rare metals such as lithium for electric cars.
China controls 95% of all available rare earths and will stop exporting when they need it for them.
As far as algae or jatropha are concerned, they’ll require an extremely expensive barrel to be worth producing.
I’ve just one advice: if you want to make long airplane trips, do it now, because the era of cheap flying is to be over very soon.

I think this story confirms the rumor that world oil production peaked in 2004 and is now in permanent decline, with little hope finding new large undiscovered oil fields anywhere on the planet similar to Mexico’s Canterell, which is now in sharp decline. What oil is left is our bridge to whatever comes next. I feel it criminal that the Democratic Party is now trying to make this a TOLL BRIDGE through Waxman’s Cap&Trade/Carbon Offset Tax bill now before Congress for passage and implementation.

Oil is sort of like smack. The glorious highs, the feeling of comfort, the feeling of ease seeping through your body, coursing through your veins, a warm security blanket protecting you from everything that is bad.

Smack is pretty darn marvellous.

Once oil starts becoming scarce, the price will increase. When that happens, incentives are created for people to find alternatives, invest in new technology for increasing production value of oil, or cut down usage.

What’s the big deal?

Peak oil disaster scenarios all assume that we will never be able to find any other energy source that is as cheap as oil. What about nuclear and renewables? And yet undiscovered sources?

At one point there was panic because everyone thought coal was going to run out.

But if there’s one thing we can count on, it’s technological progress.

So no need to panic everyone.

Nowhere to grow biofuels? What about biofuels from Algae? Or more importantly – hemp? Easy to grow, so many uses, so much better than oil. No danger to food production.
