Poverty is not a cause of AIDS, whether on its own or as one of a number of what T King calls “factors”. AIDS is a syndrome that is caused by HIV infection. Absent HIV, there is no AIDS. Poverty is relevant insofar as it renders people vulnerable to HIV infection and limits their ability to fight HIV infection.

Mbeki’s understanding is far removed from this reality. This is not something regurgitated by lazy journalists. Read the transcripts of his public utterances for clarity – address to the NCOP in October 1999, response to questions in the National Assembly in September 2000 and his ZK Mathews Memorial Lecture at Fort Hare in October 2001.

Your article is erudite, but I recent your continued falsification of facts. To assert that something is a co-factor is different from asserting that it is the sole factor.

Your assrtion therefore that “He rightly noted the link between poverty and Aids, and then leaped to the conclusion that poverty is the cause of Aids” is not accurate. It is a regurgitation of lazy journos who seek to be seen to “speak truth to power”.
