Towards the end of the 19th century, a belief in the innate superiority of the Nordic, or “Aryan”, races — specifically of the Germanic and Anglo-Saxon variety, but by implication including others — started to become fashionable. This way of thinking would reach its gruesome culmination in the catastrophe of Nazism, with its cult of übermensch Aryanism inspiring the dispossession, subjugation and sometimes even outright extermination of other races deemed “inferior”.
Initially, theories of Nordic-Teutonic racial superiority were by no means confined an exclusively German phenomenon, but were very much in vogue in Anglophone circles as well. Houston Stewart Chamberlain did much to popularise the idea and give it a veneer of intellectual credibility.
Such ideas also made their way to the United States, at the time still largely dominated by the Anglo-Saxon sector of a population whose make-up was in any case far less ethnically diverse as it is today. Ku Klux Klan ideologue Hiram Wesley Evans thus could refer to “the so-called Nordic race which, for all its faults, has given the world almost the whole of modern civilisation”. Such ideas were by no means confined to the fringes. President Warren Harding’s campaign manager Will Hays, for example, had no qualms about describing his lineage as “the finest pioneer blood, Anglo-Saxon, German, Scotch-Irish and Dutch” (the Celtic Scotch-Irish being regarded as equivalent to the Nordic races for this purpose). To state the obvious, it is all a very far removed from the Obama era.
That such theories were fashionable during this particular period is understandable since the late 19th to early 20th centuries were certainly a time of pronounced Anglo-Saxon and Germanic ascendancy. Britain’s empire covered a quarter of the globe, her navy famously dominated the seas and her economic hegemony dated back at least a century to the Industrial Revolution. Germany, after centuries of fragmentation, was now a dynamic united entity, economically and militarily dominant on the European continent and arguably at the height of her intellectual and cultural influence. Across the Atlantic, the United States was flexing its muscles with increasing confidence in its nascent sense of Manifest Destiny.
By contrast, the non-Nordic civilisations were pretty much in the doldrums. India and its immediate neighbours were British colonies, while China was sunk in a humiliating torpor that saw its sovereignty being continually violated with impunity by the European powers (and by Japan, too, as it happens, prefiguring the impressive modern-day emergence of the Far Eastern countries as major world players). The Islamic world, once so dominant, was lagging hopelessly behind its Euro-Christian rivals. Some two-thirds of Muslim countries were European colonies while the remainder mainly falling within the decayed and fast collapsing Ottoman Empire. Spain had ceased to be a world power at least two centuries before, Italy had only just emerged from centuries of colonisation by the Hapsburgs, Russia was in crisis and even France, humiliatingly thrashed in the Franco-Prussian War, was playing second fiddle to its powerful German neighbour.
Beliefs in an innate “Nordic” superiority were thus understandable in the context of the times, yet quite apart from the moral issues such racist theories raised, how correct was that assumption in the light of world history? A broad overview of the waxing and waning of major world civilisations over the past five millennia of recorded history will have revealed even then that the prevailing Nordic hegemony — military, economic, cultural and technological — was actually quite a recent phenomenon and far from typical of what had gone before.
The cradle of civilisation was not northern Europe, but the Middle East. It was in Mesopotamia — modern-day Iraq — that the first great human strides in such areas of literature, philosophy, architecture, law and science began dramatically manifesting. Thereafter major civilisations, lasting for many centuries, emerged throughout the region, such as in Egypt, Assyria, Persia and — again in Iraq — Babylon. The Jewish civilisation, based in ancient Israel but nurtured in other Middle Eastern countries as well, would eventually give rise to two of the greatest religious movements the world would ever know, Christianity and Islam. Meanwhile further east, India and China were establishing their own vastly impressive civilisations.
Europe too eventually began to come into the picture, but when it did it was not through its “Nordic” races, then frankly mired in primitive barbarity, but through its “deep south” Greek peoples. The myriad achievements of the Grecian civilisation established some 2 500 years ago continue to reverberate to this day. After Greece’s decline, it was the Romans’ turn — another southern European power. Likewise, their accomplishments have been the building blocks of those societies that succeeded them.
Far from participating in this dramatically rich period of advancement and human creativity, the Germanic peoples eventually were instrumental in destroying them, plunging Europe into an extended “Dark Ages”. The so-called Renaissance that was seen as Europe’s revival was, to a large extent, an Italian phenomenon. Meanwhile, during the Dark and Middle Ages, Islam burst onto the scene, creating a vast empire that for centuries was well in advance of the Christian world in terms of scholarship, governance and economic management.
It took Spain — another southern European country — until the end of the 15th century to finally rid itself of Islamic occupation. Thereafter, it was Spain that was the dominant European power for an extended period, during which time it established an overseas Empire in the Americas to rival in size every empire that had gone before. Little Portugal also participated in that venture. Spain’s eclipse in the 17th century was followed by a period of French dominance, something that was as much cultural as it was military. This lasted until at least the mid-1850s.
Only in the 17th century, in fact, does one see the emergence of north European people’s as major players on the world stage. The Dutch succeeded in throwing off the Spanish yoke, established a sizable overseas empire and enjoyed an impressive period of economic and cultural influence. England emerged much the stronger after its civil war and proceeded to lay the foundations of its subsequent meteoric rise. Even Sweden enjoyed a status as a great power for a time. Germany remained fragmented, but its Prussian component was becoming a force to be reckoned with. While the Netherlands and Sweden gradually declined as great powers, the British and Germans continued to rise (significantly, the final decisive defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815 was accomplished almost entirely by British and German troops).
I realise I’ve been simplifying wildly, yet in broad terms the core of what I am saying seems to be correct: The Anglo-Saxon and Germanic period of influence was not indicative, as its proponents asserted, of an historic superiority but was in reality a relatively late phenomenon that had been preceded by millennia of supposedly backward non-Aryan races dominating the world stage. What is more, the resurgence
of the southern and eastern Asian countries — India, China, Thailand, Japan, the Koreas and Taiwan — suggests that the era of north European dominance is already coming to an end. It’s all a turning wheel, in other words. Maybe one of these centuries, it might even be sub-Saharan Africa’s turn, if the Botswana rather than Zimbabwe road is followed.
One last word: Many might be offended by all this talk of major world civilisations and the comparisons made with what are by implication inferior societies. My intention rather has been to use the criteria of what constitutes a significant civilisation against those who once argued on behalf of an intrinsic north European superiority.
There is a telling vignette I would like to share, because it made a lasting impression on me when I first encountered it. Essentially, it is about an early encounter between British crewmen and the Aborigine inhabitants of the East Coast of Australia some years prior to the British take-over. As recorded by the crewman concerned, a group of Aborigines were met on the shore of Botany Bay and offered the usual tools and trinkets used to win over the “barbarians” — beads, nails, copper wire and the like. However, instead of capering and clamouring for more like the eager “primitives” they were supposed to be, the Aborigines merely glanced briefly at the items, then threw them aside. “All they wanted us to do, it seemed, was go away” the writer commented.
I don’t remember exactly who was concerned and when this took place, but it is a highly revealing little vignette. The Aborigines might have been essentially a Stone Age people, but they were quite happy to remain that way. Certainly, they felt no sense of cultural inferiority at the time vis-à-vis the newcomers to their ancestral land, even if they were unable to resist its rapacious advance.

Very interesting article. History of the Super Races, in a nutshell, nice to know in order to counter the outrageous arguments that some pseudo-aryans still throw at us. Thanks for the facts, clearly and succinctly put. But isn’t it funny, and I know, being a blonde blue eyed person, that people still rank you according to this outdated heirarchy. I get respect and admiration that I haven’t earned, not complaining but i see through it. It’s as if being blonde with blue eyes means you’ve got something special, brains, (despite the jokes) or money, I don’t know what, divine grace, all lies but it goes very deep this assumption. Especially in this country. I blame the germans.
I agree with you assessment that racial superiority is not based on scientific evidence or complete human history. It is completely irrational and based on a instant in time assessment of the world history.According to the big-bang calender, the universe is more than 12 billion years old.
The only longest available scientific evidence stretching back beyond five millenia (to millions of years back) is that Africa is the craddle of human kind (supported by the fossil record). Evolution and consequently civilisation began in Africa. Furthermore, the human genome project shows that there is more than 99.9% genetic similarities within the global human population. So, racial superiority has no rational basis what so ever!!!
What is your perception of the Jewish perception on the differences between nationality, a people, a society, race, colour, and religion. What are Jews categorised as?
Fascinating. We all originated in Africa around 150 000 years ago, and our DNA shows we are incredibly alike, with only minute differences between all the people you mention (in fact, there is vastly more DNA diversity within Africa than in all the rest of the world combined). These “differences” we (usually politicians seeking influence) trumpet have much more to do with transient power, yet time and again we cling to our differences. For a fascinating time-lapse view of where we all stem from, and how we got to where we are (or were before the rapid movement across continents that ships allowed started us mixing our DNA freely), see: http://www.bradshawfoundation.com/journey/
Your interesting analysis leaves out any reference to Switzerland. This combination of German, French, Italian and Romany peoples has been a bastion of civilisation in Europe since the 13th century. I believe Switzerland is the most “civilised” country in the world today - good governance, good institutions, good people.
South Africa might do well to take another look at the Swiss system, as suggested by Louw and Kendall in their book “South Africa The Solution”, published in the early nineties. If the 3 most antagonistic cultures in Europe can combine successfully, perhaps we could succeed too down here in the south.
It could be held that David Sacks, in his article “Revising the Aryan racial superiority cult”, is indulging his own racial prejudice. That’s his problem but it adds little to the debate except that it provokes a more responsible response.
Although the author goes to great lengths to describe evolution of empires, the title and context creates the impression that the sense of racial superiority was solely or essentially an Aryan phenomenon. It was not.
In place of this divisive piece of verbosity, his article would have better served the need to understand and thereby reduce racial animosity by sending out the message that, during any given period, various nations have held power. That, just because a nation might be “great”, it does follow that every one of its natives is superior to others. We need to accept and always remember that there are good, bad and indifferent in every community.
There is an excellent book that caused some controversy 22 years ago, called Black Athena, by Martin Bernal. He describes in some detail the creation of national/racial mythology, and their evolution in Europe.
It is worth a read, as it still holds up two decades later.
“Maybe one of these centuries, it might even be sub-Saharan Africa’s turn”.
Bwahahahahahahaha! Snuck that little joke in there nicely Dave.
What “great religions”? Judaism has always been a relatively small religion of the “Chosen people”, Christianity was responsible for the “Dark Ages” and the deaths of countless millions of their own and followers of other religions. As for Islam, much the same as Christianity, only they are still carrying on in much the same way today. Backward mythologies all of them, just as much myth as the myth of Aryan supremacy.
The Anglo-Saxons and the Celts were enemies for centuries in Britain. Some even carry it on today.
This article tells me nothing that I didn’t learn in the years up to “O Level” history in the UK. We were never taught that Europe had a monopoly on civilisation. We learned of the great cultures of China, India, Ur and the “Cradle of Civilisation”, Egypt, Greece, Rome and ultimately of the rise of importance of Europe and the USA.
We also were taught about the Ottoman Empire. We were not taught to look down on these civilisations, but to realise and admirewhat they had all brought to the development of civilisation as we know it today.
Maybe you were taught the history of Jan van Riebeck, the Great Trek and the Anglo-Boer war here and that nothing else existed.
I would argue that the “superiority cult” follows the staggering economic advances that followed the Industrial Revolution. I think the Aryans got there first but the Eastern Tigers have adopted the same characteristics of Western economic success: Calvinist work ethic, capital accumulation and scientific research. The Aryans no longer dominate because more countries subscribe to the same tenets of economics. And yes, I’m not surprised that any country that generates fabulous wealth in a world of poverty considers itself superior to the rest
And just to correct you, the earlier Ionian Greeks were in fact Indo-European, Alexander the great (A decendent of) himself had blonde hair and blue eyes.
And for ‘Lady Salsa’ who laments the special treatment her physical features afford her. I’m afraid it’s a universal attribute for lighter skinned people to be ‘higher’ caste than the darker. This occurs in Iran, in India, in North Africa and has been a phenomenon long before European expansion. I cannot explain this, but it is simply fact.
@ Madoda, right one we are all brothers and sisters of humanity - Africa is the cradle, climate made subtle changes.
I’m of Scot/Norwegian descent, but basically just a human, so stop generalising and playing victim. We’ve all had our little empires and conquests on this planet of war. I couldn’t care less about where you come from, but rather how you behave. Ironically your article shows your insecurity towards the norse culture, its steeped in a rich history and without the german nazi ww2 twist on it, does not preach planetary superiority. How does your jewish culture differ?, far more narcissistic in my view.
Racism is serious business especially when you happen to be on the receiving end of it.
It is a systematic, entrenched humiliation, exclusion and violent oppression of a race by another. It needs to be enforced by all organs of state power whether overtly as in Apartheid South Africa and Nazi Germany or covertly as is the case in many countries in the world today.
It was not that Aryans were clever, Jewish scientists, bankers and cultural professionals had to be herded into cattle trucks to the death camps. Jewish professors had to be hounded out of universities. So the myth of calvinsitic work ethic or Aryan intelligence is NOT TRUE. In South Africa a debased inferior kind of education for Blacks preoccupied the best Afrikaner minds. You were not even allowed to compete with the white super race in sports lest the lie was exposed.
It is a madness whose malaise cripples the best of morals and even the NG kerk preached from the Books of Exodus and Numbers about the holy race keeping itself pure from the godless natives. Some editorials in Afrikaans papers spoke of left over mud used by Elohim to create inferior races.
It’s a sordid affair which even Julius Malema at his worst could not even stoop so low as to expound;except that we have on record many of South African best whites who defended this abominable irrationality and went on to build cities and public spaces with Apartheid signs.
Ned - Whatever one might think of Christianity, it unquestionably underpinned European cultural achievements and scholarship. The magnificent art, architecture, music and literature it produced can hardly be denied. Morever, far from causing the Dark Ages, it was through Christian scholars and clergymen that the Greco-Roman heritage was to a degree preserved.
Syd - tough question. I personally hold by the Orthodox Jewish approach, namely that a Jew is someone born to a Jewish mother or who converted according to strict Jewish law. Others, however, have a broader definition, and the ‘Who is a Jew’ question is one of the most hotly contested in Jewish circles today, especially in areas where assimilation is rampant.
Dick Corner - I agree with what you say, and thought I had more or less said this in my post. Maybe reread it and see if you have not misunderstood me.
T Watkins - Switzerland really does seem to have gotten things just right. Maybe they’re too busy enjoying the famed scenery to indulge in ruinous ethnic squabbles. Mind you, scenic wonder don’t seem to have helped the Capetonians.
I have said it before, but South Africans don’t need reconciliation, but deprogramming.
Blonde Greeks? Huh? Talk about being stuck in the 1950s of anthropology. You would think the 1960s, independence, liberation, and the Human Genome Project never happened.
At least you know what to do. Start reading Black Athena by Martin Bernal, The Mismeasure Of Man by Stephen Jay Gould, The Funding Of Scientific Racism by William H. Tucker.
Thank goodness the Nazis were consistent enough to reject the “Jewish” science of atomic fission; had they been pragmatic and cultivated the leading theorists of the day such as Einstein, they might have won WW2.
@Mr K,
There are many reputable scholars who have dismissed Black Athena as a load of rubbish.
@David Saks,
Beg to disagree with you about Christianity preserving the Greco-Roman heritage. From what I understand those Christian monks spent their time copying the bible and other church tracts. The muslimsa preserved more of the Greek mathematics and science than the Christians ever did.
That was the only good thing ever to come out of Islam.
It might have been Ayran for the Jews, but the we-they phenonomen is universal. Why do you think the Japs and the Chinese were at each others throats for centuries?
And when an Empire is established, whether Attila the Hun, the Romans, the Brits or the Americans - the imperialists always think they are superior.
The Romans most definately did not consider Boedicia and her woad painted warriors as anything other than inferiors.
The debate about Aryan superiority is incomplete without mentioning the impact that Darwin’s theory had on it. We are celebrating the 150 year anniversary of Darwin’s theory this year and it is no coincidence that Aryan superiority started to rear its ugly head in the decades that followed. Darwin’s opinion of racial evolution is almost never publicised these days in popular media when he is celebrated, but one part of his theory was the fact that certain races were more evolved than others. Aborigines were deemed, by the unscientific method of judging their appearance, to be closer to early hominids than the rest of mankind. Then followed other blacks, then asians, then north europeans as the ultimate product of evolution. His evolution theory became very popular in the whole of Europe during the late 19th century, but with it also his views on races.
Eugenics was a direct outflow from Darwinism and gathered influential followers in America and Europe, specifically Germany. Eugenics believed in the engineering/breeding of a more evolved race, and it also believed that some races were further along the track than others. It was the Eugenic scientists who decided who were good specimens to keep alive, and who should be exterminated in order to help nature along a little bit. After WW2 there were suddenly no Eugenics supporters to be found in America or Europe.
@MrK Black Athena is a book that is largely rejected by classicists and archeologists. Bernal’s claims cannot be substantiated archeolgically, and his use of myth is deeply flawed. His approach to etymology is also widely criticised.
There were a few stiff necked (and quite frankly racist) classicists who dismissed Black Athena out of hand, over 20 years ago. However, if you examine their arguments, they are very shallow. On the other hands, Egyptologists are consistently confirming a lot of it’s claims.
However, even if you don’t like the use of linguistic etymologies as evidence, Martin Bernal gives a very detailed historiography of the shift in European views of Egypt, Greece and the Levant throughout the last four centuries of European history. And that is really what we are talking about here, I think.
‘President Warren Harding’s campaign manager Will Hays, for example, had no qualms about describing his lineage as “the finest pioneer blood, Anglo-Saxon, German, Scotch-Irish and Dutch”
What, pray tell, is so wrong with claiming a heritage and lineage?
Are Europeans to be denied this as a result of Hitler’s ravings?
Are you not yourself in some way proud of your Hebrew blood?
I was hoping that you would give some possibly reason for the Nazi’s group narcissism (self love)
My unresearched theory is that it is a “political leadership ploy” to create esprit de corps.
I have seen this in para-troops who regard themselves superior to run of the mill infantry. Gordon created “The invincible army” in China in the 1800’s - it was effective. Remember “I am the greatest” Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) And now we have God’s greatest gift to the DA - Little Julius.
I am not decrying this form of narcissism - its a useful mechanism which only becomes evil when eugenics is added into the computation to create a superior race. It has it’s basis in collectivist notions which deny rights to the smallest minority group - the individual.
May I repeat the need to understand and thereby reduce racial animosity by sending out the message
that, during any given period, various nations have held power,
that, just because a nation might be “great” at any given time, it does follow that every one of its natives is superior to others,
that there is a need to accept and always remember that there are good, bad and indifferent in every community.
