I am not South African Neutral, I am South African Passionate

Just wishing something will not make it so. There are divisions, there is hatred. Blocking it out and thinking that apartheid is long-gone so we must all be hunky-dory, lovey-dovey with each other is morally simplistic. It’s rather selfish too, basically saying, “Debate is too painful and bothersome, so I’m going to carry on with my life, ignore the difficult issues and hope for the best.”

91% of black Africans are Christian. Shocking*

I’m not a Christian, but unlike many people I’m patient with the religion. I feel the same way about Islam, Judaism and Scientology. Most of their followers mean well and don’t want to harm others. Let it be, do unto others and all that charismatic jazz. It’s the minority who are the PR disaster. But…

Porn and pirates get a Helping Hand

Ah, trade unions. Always sticking their noses in things they know absolutely nothing about. Who else would set up an organisation to fight child molestation and name it “Helping Hand”? It’s like those reborn Christians who named their bookstore “CUM”. It gets better. Trade union Solidarity’s Helping Hand has now responded to DSTV’s proposed porn…

The new dompas: What would you do for an EU passport?

“I hate my job. And it’s so cold and miserable here. I just want to come home!” I hear this pretty often when I chat to friends online. “Well, why don’t you then?” I reply. “Because it’s just three more years until I get my British passport.” Sigh, the allure of a little burgundy book….

No food please, I’m a woman!

A friend recently told me that 90% of the women she knows have “food issues”. “Food issues.” It’s such an all-encompassing term. When someone says, “Oh, she has serious food issues,” it could mean: She was / is anorexic. She was / is bulimic. She won’t eat anything with sugar in it. She won’t eat…

The tyranny of the Christmas turkey

Why do people do this? We have our own giant flightless bird to eat. Ostrich meat is richer in protein, tastier and doesn’t take six hours to cook. It might not fit on the dining room table, but it goes really well with gravy and cranberry sauce (if you insist).

I’d rather be a whore than a Madonna

So Belle de Jour, the London call girl who blogged anonymously about her salacious exploits, has come out of the lingerie closet — she’s a scientist who needed to pay the bills while writing her thesis. After being painted with a scarlet tar brush by feminists and morality monitors alike, it turns out that the…

Black diamond or wit diamanté?

Advertising is the ultimate classification industry. Only the apartheid government was as detailed and even they didn’t know what kind of cooldrink you preferred on weekends. Tell me where you live, what you drive, how old you are, your home language, and I’ll tell you what products you like. Yep, we split people into neat…

Hot women have it easier

Like it or not, beautiful women find it easier to succeed in business. Okay, attractive women and men find it easier to succeed. But looks have a far greater impact on a woman’s career. Think about it. How many fat, ugly male CEOs are there? And how many fat, ugly female CEOs are there? Just…

Shove it up your noughties

The rise of social media is ironic at a time when the consumerist egomania of the eighties has enjoyed a revival. There’s a reason MC Hammer pants are back in fashion and it’s not just because Vogue says so.
